Charles Miller 1894

BBC Sport

>Project Details

This is the little known story of Charles Miller. And the most surprising fact about this seminal moment in English and Brazilian football history is how many people don’t know this story. Brazilian kids learn about this guy at school, to them he is a legend, a missionary of the real religion of Brazil.

In a nutshell, Miller left England with little more than a couple of footballs and a rule book. 25 days later he arrived at the trading port of Santos on the Brazilian coast. Here he introduced the leather ball to the wonderful people of Brazil, and something mystical must have been added to the mix here because from then on the rest is history. Charles Miller (the epic moustache is also historically correct) was an amazing guy.
