Mute Records identity

Mute Records

>Project Details

The original Mute Records logo featured a man walking, as seen from above. It was a readymade, it came from a Letraset sheet of architectural symbols. For those of you who aren’t old enough to remember, Letraset made rub-down sheets of letters and symbols, before computers made that kind of thing easy.

Mute boss, Daniel Miller wanted to keep the man but change everything else, and create a consistent look across the four Mute businesses, each with their variations of the Mute logo.

Daniel is a big fan of German electronic music, and felt the need for order and systems. Intro designed a geometric font for the purpose, and made everything isometric to achieve the degree of technical complexity, yet simplicity that was desired.

The isometric grid meant there were countless possibilities for tessellating motifs, when designing covers for promos, label samplers and catalogues.
